Burst pipe emergency: stop the water before anything else
These four steps limit damage while the plumber is on the way. Same-day and after-hours calls follow the same order.
1Close the main
Turn the main shutoff fully clockwise. It is often near the water heater, in a basement or garage, or where the line enters an exterior wall.
2Drain the lines
Open a faucet at the lowest level and one upstairs. Flush a toilet once to empty the tank, which takes pressure off the damaged pipe.
3Kill power to wet areas
Switch off breakers only if you can reach the panel without standing in water. Otherwise stay out and tell the dispatcher.
4Save what you can
Lift furniture and boxes off wet floors, take photos for your insurer, and put buckets under any ceiling bulge.
If the split is on a hot line, also turn off the water heater. A tank that loses water while heating can fail.
Why pipes split in a Clearfield winter
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Ogden-Hinckley station, about 12 miles north, show 121 nights a year at or below 32F, about 38 at or below 20F and 8 at or below 10F. Median dates for the first and last 32F freeze are October 22 and April 22.
Clearfield's permit criteria list a 30 inch frost line and a 10F winter design temperature. Any line outside the heated envelope, such as a garage, an attic run or a hose bib, has months of exposure each year, so late October is the time to disconnect hoses and check insulation.
Water expands as it freezes, and the pipe usually splits where ice has built pressure rather than at the frozen spot. The damage shows when the ice melts and flow resumes. That is why a flood can start at 2 p.m. after a freezing night.

Frozen pipe repair: thawing without making it worse
If a pipe is frozen but has not split, you can often thaw it yourself. Utah State University Extension advises shutting off the main supply first, opening the faucet on the frozen line, and applying heat at the faucet end, then working toward the blockage. A hair dryer, heat lamp, heat tape or hot towels work, and boiling water and open flames do not.
If water is already dripping or hissing from the pipe, stop thawing and close the main. The ice may be acting as a plug, and heat will turn a small crack into a spray. A plumber can thaw the line, find the split and replace the damaged section in one visit.
The standard a burst pipe repair is built to
Clearfield City's 2026 design criteria list the 2024 International Plumbing Code as the adopted plumbing code, effective July 1, 2026. Cutting out a split section and fitting new pipe is repair work that follows that code for materials and joints.
Ask which pipe and fittings will go in and whether the repair is rated for the same pressure as the rest of the line. A mismatched coupling is where the next leak starts.
Safety checklist while a pipe is spraying
- Close the main shutoff first, then open the lowest tap to drain the line.
- Turn off power to a wet room only if the breaker is reachable from dry floor. If not, stay out and tell dispatch.
- Move people and pets out of rooms where a ceiling sags, because wet drywall can drop without warning.
- Photograph the damage before anything is moved, so the insurance record is complete.
- If you smell gas or the water heater is involved, leave the building and call 911 or the gas utility.
Dispatch can talk you through the shutoff on the call if you cannot find the main.

Signs of a split include a bulge or white frost on exposed pipe, a sudden drop in pressure, water stains spreading across a ceiling and the sound of spraying behind a wall. The plumber starts at the coldest places, which are exterior walls, garages, attics and crawlspaces, and follows the water upstream.
A moisture meter or thermal camera helps when the split is hidden. If a wall must be opened, the cut is kept as small as the repair allows. Hidden damage you cannot see yet is a reason to schedule a leak detection check after a hard freeze.
Repair options by pipe material
The right repair depends on what the pipe is made of and how much of it has failed.
Copper pipe repair
A split copper section is cut out and replaced with new pipe and soldered or press-fit couplings. Copper that has frozen once often has weak spots nearby, so the plumber checks adjacent joints before closing the wall.
PEX
PEX tolerates some freezing better than rigid pipe, but fittings can still crack. A damaged section is cut out and new PEX joins with crimp or expansion fittings.
Galvanized steel
Older steel pipe corrodes from the inside, and a split often means the surrounding pipe is thin too. Repairing one section may only move the failure, which is when repiping deserves a quote.
Which fix fits which failure
This framework helps you ask the right questions, and the plumber confirms what applies to your pipe.
| Failure | Repair option | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Single frozen split in copper | Cut out and couple | Neighboring pipe and joints look sound |
| Split at a hose bib or its pipe | Replace the bib and short section | Hose was left connected before the freeze |
| Split in PEX near a fitting | New PEX section and fittings | Rest of the run is intact |
| Pinhole in older copper | Spot repair, or replace the run | One pinhole (spot), several pinholes (replace) |
| Burst steel pipe in older home | Replace the run or repipe | Pipe walls are corroded in several places |
Permit rules vary, so ask the Clearfield City building department. The city lists replacement plumbing lines among permit work.
Pipe leak repair and drain pipe repair
Pipe leak repair
Not every failure is a burst. A weeping joint or a pinhole can drip for months, and it needs the same cut, replace and test. The cause of pinholes varies by pipe and water, so the plumber examines the section before recommending a spot fix or a longer replacement.
Drain pipe repair
A cracked drain pipe leaks wastewater instead of clean water and often shows as a damp stain, a smell or a slow drain. Short sections inside the house are replaced with new pipe. A failure in the buried sewer is a sewer line repair job, and a camera shows the extent first.
What goes into the price of a burst pipe repair
A clear price comes before work starts. These are the factors that set it.
- Where the pipe is
- An exposed garage run is quick. A pipe inside a finished wall or ceiling needs opening and closing.
- Pipe type and length
- Copper, PEX and steel need different parts, and a longer damaged stretch needs more material.
- How much failed
- A single split costs less than a pipe that has frozen and cracked in several places.
- Access and shutoff
- A working main valve speeds the job. A stuck or leaking main valve adds work.
- Timing
- Overnight and same-day work shifts scheduling, and the price is still stated first.
Homeowners insurance usually responds to sudden and accidental water damage, such as a pipe that splits in a cold snap, and often not to long-term seepage or neglect. Check your policy and report quickly, since photos and the plumber's findings support a claim.
Call (801) 207-7520 and describe the damage. The plumber will tell you what to expect.
What this repair does not cover
Stopping the water and fixing the pipe is our job. Drying carpets, pulling wet insulation and rebuilding drywall belong to restoration contractors, and your insurer may have preferred ones. We cannot promise that a repaired line will not freeze again if the space stays unheated.
Once the repair is done, insulate exposed lines. USU Extension notes insulation alone will not stop prolonged freezing without some heat source or periodic flow. The same service reaches Roy and Clinton when a cold snap strikes there too.
Burst pipe questions we hear in winter
Do you handle burst pipe emergencies at night or on weekends in Clearfield?
Yes. Our line is open 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays, and a licensed plumber is dispatched for active water. We do not promise an arrival time. While you wait, close the main shutoff. Keep people away from any area where water is near electrical equipment.
Where is my main water shutoff?
It is usually near the water heater, in a basement or utility room, or in a garage where the line enters the house. A round wheel handle turns clockwise to close. A lever handle closes when it sits across the pipe. Find it now so you are not searching during a flood.
Can I thaw a frozen pipe myself?
If it has not split, yes. Close the main, open the faucet, and warm the pipe from the faucet end with a hair dryer, heat lamp or hot towels. Avoid boiling water and open flames. If water leaks or sprays, stop and call.
Should I turn off the water heater when a pipe bursts?
If the split is on a hot line or the tank may drain, yes. Switch off the electric breaker or set the gas control to off. A tank that heats without water can fail, and relighting afterward is safer with a plumber present.
Is a burst pipe covered by homeowners insurance?
Often, when the damage is sudden and accidental. Policies differ on frozen pipes in vacant homes and on long-term seepage, so read yours or ask your agent. We can document the cause and the repair.
Do I need a permit to replace a burst pipe in Clearfield?
Clearfield lists replacement plumbing lines among permit work, while replacing a fixture does not need one. Whether a small repair counts is not spelled out, so ask the Clearfield City building department before work begins.
